The quote is pretty general and being here in Africa I see many peoples lives greatly enriched through different religions. I think the quote is also talking about the incidence of colonialism and that sometimes missionaries came with religion but some had ideas about taking wealth.
I'm reading a great book at the moment called Africa: A biography, which covers this subject. Maybe I'll know more soon......
