A lot of people try and predict the future of everything. The Stockmarket, the economy, trends, civilisation, the weather and the Earth.
As I saw a star 150 times the size of our own sun die today (or 240 million light years away) I think to myself, no matter how much information you have, nothing or no-one can accurately predict our future. At any moment a Comet could slam into earth and we wouldn't know what hit us.
Movies such as Armageddon and deep impact give us the false sense that we can prepare for these situations, I think not.
No matter how good our technology, or our reaction time to respond to such an event, I don't think we would be a match and I'm sure the world as we know it would be demolished within seconds. Oh but the good old USA would be able to come up with some kind of plan... Don't think so.. judging by their "Emergency response time" to New Orleans when Katrina struck... they should be hitting the alarm bells about 10 minutes before impact.
But all this said... I think the main reason no-one really thinks about this... or let's it effect our day to day life, is that we have enough issues and possible causes to worry about. Who cares about a comet when a germ the size of a pin head could kill you!
I'm sure most of you would read this and think... what a downer... look on the lighter side of life etc... When in fact It only makes me want to enjoy life even more, live everyday as if it were my last. I can happily say that we were destroyed tomorrow, I wouldn't be sad, I would just enjoy the view!
