Who is Mick?

  • Mick web strategist dude (by bigmick)

Hi, I'm a part of the great Tangler team and I ran marketing and business development for Kazaa, launching version 2 and taking it to the most downloaded application in history.

I also worked at Zapr, IBM, Virgin, MassMedia, eCoast and have helped build loads more web applications. My chief skill is in balancing the community, technology and business sides - I speak all three languages.

If you're running a web application and you want to make it really hum, then I'm here to help.

Facebook Frustratingly Diverse Already

View from Platform 1, originally uploaded by Tavallai.

I went to wish my ol'Melbourne buddy Cameron Reilly a happy birthday on Facebook...

"Cool, Facebook neatly tells me when it's my friends birthdays where all these other birthday reminders have failed."

.. so I go to his profile and write out a very witty birthday wish involving morning breath.

POST

Facebook says, "Please add 'Advanced Wall' App"

I say, "Get lost, I already have at least 2 wall apps."

I search for another wall on his profile. I find one, but it's not the one I use either. I find SuperWall, which I do use, but Cam has that one closed.

So I send him a message but it's not public so it's not as funny.

Here we are in the early days of Facebook and it's already got compatibility issues.

So let's talk about 'survival of the fittest' versus 'it just bloody works'.

I think my non-tech friends like that Facebook does everything they need well. It's not FULL FEATURED but it doesn't need to be. So do these same friends want Facebook open for variety and innovation, or do they want it controlled so it works?

I know lots of non-techies that are complaining about some of these issues already.

(It would be interesting to get feedback, but of course anyone reading this blog will most likely be techie and therefore unqualified.)
