Just want to do a follow up to say that I was excited about two things in the last 24 hours about Football even amongst the bitterness.
1 - Australia will qualify as a part of Asia for the next world cup. No longer will we just play the last qualifier, we'll qualify from within Asia. This will give us a better chance and a much better preparation. Very very good.
2 - Lukas Neill has been tipped as the new Australian captain. This is great. He was a champion not only in skills and effort, but also in his attitude. When that penalty was given, most players from the other teams would have berated the referee if not worse. Italy, France, Argentina, Brazil - they all would have ran at the ref. But Lukas just asked why and shrugged. Took it like a man. (Taking notes me Henry and Totti?)
Such a great game ruined by a decision that didn't have to be given. I'm happy to say Italy defended amazingly and that Lukas was a bit tired and sloppy in that last tackle, but it didn't deserve it.
Very proud of the Aussies. And Lukas Neill is a legend. He played so well in the whole tournament. Awesome.
I would have let the Italians have their win but when I heard that their coach said that Lukas pulled him down I was livid. I don't mind someone winning with a bit of luck, but when they are clearly pushing a point which is not right I get a bit cranky.
This is what the coach said; "...Then at the end (Fabio) Grosso was superb and (Francesco) Totti perfect in tucking away the penalty." Full Article
Superb? He pulled a penalty. Is that how you want to win? I have no respect for that. I hope they get creamed by Ukraine or Germany.
